You can usually use the onsen facilities even if you are not staying the night at the ryokan (you can buy a day ticket). The 5th of August is the last day and the highlight of the Hakone Summer Matsuri Festival. In a quite dramatic and unique show they set fire to a shrine gate on the lake, lanterns float on the lake, and there is a huge firework show in the evening. Many food stalls sell Japanese street food like okonomiyaki, takoyaki, shaved ice, and fruits.

The ship currently creating the biggest buzz is the latest addition to the fleet, the Queen Ashinoko, which entered service in the summer of 2019. The ship’s interior is the work of industrial designer Mitooka Eiji, who also applied his innovative style to the Kyūshū Shinkansen and the luxury cruise train Nanatsuboshi. The Royal II, which entered service in 2013, is modelled on the Royal Louis, which was part of the Royal French Navy in the eighteenth century. The ship features pirate figurines on the deck and optical illusions in the hallways where passengers can snap photos. Historically, Lake Ashi’s location on the ancient Tōkaidō highway stretching from Edo (now Tokyo) to Kyoto made it an important commercial center.

Experiences

If you have the Hakone Freepass and are already in Hakone, you can just get in line and show your freepass to the agent when boarding. For those with the Hakone Free Pass, you can use this pass on the Hakone Sightseeing Cruise, taking as many trips as you want during the validity period. He cruise is a year-round attraction, and the surrounding landscape changes with the seasons. Cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, vibrant foliage in autumn, and snowy landscapes in winter all provide different and captivating perspectives of the area. If you plan on combining Hakone and Fuji Five Lakes, you should consider buying the 3-day Fuji Hakone Pass, as we did.

And possibly hard to find a good position (unless you quickly get a spot when you get on). The Hakone Sightseeing Cruise serves the 3 ports of Togendai-ko, Hakonemachi-ko, and Motohakone-ko on Lake Ashi. Once up at Lake Ashi, you can take a sightseeing cruise across the lake on a pirate ship that would not seem out of place in Pirates of the Caribbean. The trip from Tōgendai back to Hakone-machi takes around 25 minutes. The standard route travels counterclockwise around the lake from Hakone-machi to Motohakone before returning to Tōgendai, a total of 70 minutes including stops. Holders of roundtrip tickets are able to reboard from any stop making it possible to explore the tourist attractions along the way and enjoy the amenities of different ships.

Unfortunately for us, we didn’t see the volcano, as the northern end of the lake was all in clouds. Just weeks after the ship entered service in April 2019, the Hakone Ropeway was shut down due to an increase in volcanic activity in Ōwakudani. Then, in October, just when the alert level had finally been lowered, a devastating typhoon put the Hakone Tozan Railway out of action. The situation has been further compounded by the coronavirus pandemic.

I hadn’t packed enough warm things with me, unfortunately, because it was supposed to be rather warm. It’s part of the Hakone Loop – which covers most of the must-see spots in the Fuji-Hakone National Park and uses no less than five different types of transportation. Japan Travel is the leading resource for Japan travel information and the primary destination for visitors planning and traveling to Japan. Mitooka’s flair for design is apparent on the inside of the ship as well, right down to the finest detail. The partially submerged Gate of Peace at Hakone Shrine is a popular photo spot. 70 spaces (charged).※ Charged parking spaces are not affiliated with our company so the cost is charged to the customer.

Japanese Urban Legends

It also gives you discounted round trip from Shinjuku Station in Tokyo to Hakone. As visitors descend the ropeway from Owakundai toward Lake Ashinoko, many are baffled by the sudden appearance of Hakone’s pirate ships. However, the ships are beautiful examples of 18th-century design and a great opportunity for some swashbuckling fun.

If you wish, tickets for the Hakone sightseeing cruises can be bought separately, too. If you’re doing the Hakone Loop or are planning to take other public transport in the area, the best idea is to get the Hakone FreePass. That way, you have the boat cruise included in the ticket – unlimited times during the validity of the ticket.

To add to the fantasy, the ship has been fitted out with cannons, treasure chests, and other curiosities. Tourists board the “pirate ships” Royal II (left) and Queen Ashinoko docked at Hakone-machi. Keep an eye out for the red torii gate of Hakone-jinja Shrine, which appears to float on the water. You will see views of rolling hills around the lake and, of course, the majestic Mount Fuji (3,776 m). After you have stepped off the pirate ship at Hakonemachi-Ko port, turn left and walk along the cozy walk path along the Ashi lakeshore. We stayed at an amazing hotel – Hakone Hanaori Hotel, right by the lake and conveniently located right by the Togenday Station (a few minutes walk).

The Hakone Sightseeing Cruise rules the waters of Hakone’s Lake Ashinoko. Furthermore, it offers dreamy, lake-side views of Mt. Fuji and Hakone Shrine. The area itself is a notable tourist hotspot and is especially popular amongst those visiting Tokyo. Hakone is renowned for its hot springs, volcanic valley, ropeway, and shrines. In particular, the area’s volcanic valley, Owakundai, is well-known for its black eggs, which are carefully boiled in its volcanic waters.

The spacious upper deck of the Hakone Ashinoko Boat Cruise’s catamaran offers uninterrupted views of Mount Fuji and the forest around Lake Ashinoko. It is a relaxing way to sightsee in Hakone, leaving road traffic and crowded transportation behind. If you don’t have the freepass, then you can separately purchase the boat cruise ticket online here.

This is the same itinerary as we did during our 2-day trip to Hakone in the first week of December before we headed on to visit Fuji Five Lakes. Here we give you our ultimate Hakone travel guide, with all of Hakone’s top attractions and sights and the best place to see Mount Fuji organized in a detailed step-by-step Hakone itinerary. Hakone is a mountain area with beautiful nature and spectacular views of the iconic Mount Fuji. Just a short train ride away from Tokyo, it is a popular weekend escape from the big city for both the Japanese as well as international tourists. The viewing area is quite big so a lot of people can enjoy the views. If you like to do some photography, though, make sure to get a spot by the railings so that you’re not blocked.
